Redesigning beIN SPORTS for Euro 2024

The web and mobile redesign I led with 6 designers. Average video watch time went from 0.4x to 1.2x after launch.

Match Engagement title above hashtag chips #client_project, #live and #sports_ux. A laptop shows the redesigned beIN Sports match page for Chelsea 3–2 Newcastle, with a goal celebration photo, news and Match Insights cards. Floating cards show top scorers, a shot map and match stats.

01 CONTEXT & PROBLEM

Built for a quick score check, not a match

beIN SPORTS wanted its Scores and Match pages ready for Euro 2024. Fans struggled to find results quickly, and once they reached a match they checked the score and left.

THE BRIEF

Improve match engagement before, during and after the game, on web and mobile.

GOALS

  1. 01 Daily active users and bounce rate
  2. 02 Click-through rate and content discovery
  3. 03 Session duration and videos watched
Flow diagram: Scores page, then Find fixture/result, then Match page. Goals listed alongside: daily active users and bounce rates; click-through rate and content discovery; session duration and videos watched.

Project scope: Scores page, then find a fixture or result, then the Match page.

02 MY ROLE

Leading a team of 6 designers

As Senior Experience Designer at Tata Elxsi, I led the beIN SPORTS web and mobile redesign from site audit to final design.

01 · DESIGN DIRECTION

Led a team of 6 designers across the Scores and Match pages, on web and mobile.

02 · CLIENT PARTNERSHIP

Ran weekly 1:1s with beIN’s Product Owner to shape their vision for the tournament.

03 · TECH FEASIBILITY

Designed 15 new match-page widgets on Opta Widget Maker (Stats Perform) and gave developers code snippets.

03 PROCESS

From site audit to final design

Five steps, from what was broken on the live site to what changed after launch.

01 Site audit Mapped what blocked goal match engagement on the live Scores and Match pages.
02 Client brief Framed Euro 2024 as the catalyst to improve match engagement before, during and after the game.
03 Design decisions Smart filters and denser score cards, a modular Match page that follows the game.
04 Final design Web and mobile layouts, including 15+ new match-page widgets.
05 Impact Video watch time after launch, alongside tournament viewership.

BENCHMARKING · SCORES & MATCH

beIN had the rights and the coverage. Rivals were winning on how fans find and follow a match.

We benchmarked six competitors on Scores and Match flows, then ran a SWOT to see where beIN could win on engagement without losing its broadcast strengths.

The raw board lives in FigJam; the table and SWOT below are the distilled takeaways we used in scope calls.

Raw competitor board: a grid of sticky notes for GOAL, FotMob, FOX Sports, OneFootball, ESPN and 365Scores, under three columns: Unique Value Proposition, Observations and Problematic Areas. Note text is blurred.

Competitor What works Where it falls short
GOAL Local journalists; a wide range of video No league filter or time sorting; leagues can’t be minimised; past, live and upcoming items look alike
FotMob Personalised feed; in-depth infographics Real-time coverage but no video; highlights rely on YouTube
FOX Sports Live match preview Scores default to yesterday; date picker limited to yesterday / today / tomorrow; sponsored articles
OneFootball “Watch now” and live options; ±7-day date picker Incomplete live page; no in-depth stats
ESPN “Today” button; competition dropdown; article link after scores Too much information and too many CTAs; no clear hierarchy
365Scores Favourite pinning; clear organisation Betting-led scores page; double scrolling; no video

SITE AUDIT · SCORES PAGE

Results were hard to find

Weak filtering and discoverability made match results slow to find. Euro 2024 needed a more dynamic, intuitive and personalised experience.

Before: the old beIN Scores page on desktop and mobile, with numbered problem areas highlighted in red.
01
Filters

Only the week's results and fixtures, with no empty states (for example, no scores for a day or sport).

02
Space above the fold

The hero section did little to help fans find a match.

03
Scores layout

Weak hierarchy; Favourites needed more prominence without overshadowing other cards.

04
Score cards

Too few cards above the fold, hurting click-through and session time.

SITE AUDIT · MATCH PAGE

Nothing kept fans on the Match page

During Euro 2020 the Match page had low session times and poor video watch rates. Fans checked the score and didn't engage further.

Before: the old beIN Match page on desktop and mobile for a 2–3 match, with numbered problem areas highlighted in red.
01
Header

Large and ineffective. It should give a quick synopsis of the match.

02
Play-by-play

Too text-heavy; lacking visuals for key events, like goal-to-goal transitions.

03
Opta wrapper

The Opta (Stats Perform) 3rd party wrapper didn't scale to mobile, so the page wasn't responsive.

REDESIGN · SCORES PAGE

More scores above the fold

Denser cards, clearer hierarchy and competition logos made it faster to scan fixtures and jump into a match.

After: the redesigned Scores page on desktop and mobile, with numbered changes highlighted in green, including competition logos and a score widget.

REDESIGN · MATCH PAGE

A page that follows the game

Modular widgets for pre-, live- and post-match states, with Match Insights and video surfaced when fans are most likely to watch.

After: the redesigned Match page on desktop (header, line-up pitch, Match Insights) and mobile (post-match and live-match views), with numbered changes highlighted in green.

FINAL · SCORES PAGE

Personalised, stats-rich scoreboard

Shipped layouts with scoreboard stats and personalisation prompts tested with beIN stakeholders.

Final Scores page on a laptop and a phone, with callouts "Don't miss a moment! Get all the vital match stats directly on the scoreboard" and "Personalise your scores page!".

FINAL · MATCH PAGE

Pre-, live- and post-match in one flow

Header, line-up pitch, live blog, extended highlights and man-of-the-match cards across breakpoints.

Final Match page in pre-match, live-match and post-match states: a match header, top scorers, a live blog, extended highlights video, a line-up pitch and a man-of-the-match card.

05 OUTCOMES & IMPACT

What changed after launch

After launch, average video watch time went from 0.4x to 1.2x. Across Euro 2024, beIN passed 1.2B cumulative views.

06 KEY LEARNINGS

What I’d keep, and what I’d change

01

CLIENT

Invest in the client relationship

Weekly 1:1s with beIN’s point of contact helped shape their vision and built the trust that keeps a big account.

NEXT TIME →

Plan regular, meaningful check-ins from day one, so the next phase is easier to win.

02

PROCESS

Align every stakeholder at kick-off

Change requests kept reshaping the brief and stretched the design timeline, because the point of contact and the wider stakeholders weren’t aligned.

NEXT TIME →

Run a stakeholder workshop at kick-off so everyone agrees on the brief before design starts.

03

TECH

Design with the tech, not around it

The 15 new match-page widgets ran on Opta Widget Maker by Stats Perform, which had a steep learning curve. I gave developers code snippets as I designed.

NEXT TIME →

Check technical feasibility throughout design, not just at handoff.
